For the past four years we have held an Afrinspire Young Leaders Conference exploring and seeking to implement an agenda arising from the issues facing young Africans today. One emerging theme has been that of job-creation.
Alongside the conference we have allowed the delegates to apply to a Young Leaders Fund in order to create jobs and launch their projects.
The best application received after last year's conference came from Gerald Kyalimpa for the creation of a Fish Farm in the Buikwe District of Uganda. The site for the farm was visited in January when the money for the project was handed over. There is a stream running through a swampy low-lying area, which is an ideal spot for the fish pond. Here Gerald is showing us the first stage of the project. He writes "We have taken a long time to make our pond because a lot of rain has interrupted our work. On many occasions we stopped the construction to first drain the water that had filled up the area. Now we are letting water run through the pond for a few days as we make the final touches before putting in the fish"
The community location and the business plan surrounding the fish pond were equally
important to this project scoring highly.
We wish Gerald and his team success as they begin keeping the fish.
