Over eighteen years, Afrinspire has been bringing information technology to Africa, delivering the first computers to rural areas and educating communities in IT for the first time. Over this period, we've seen some of our beneficiaries become leading IT consultants in their region, such as Isaac Omoding in Uganda and Jules Nkurunziza in Burundi. Many of our beneficiaries now train others in their community.
This year alone, we've sent 232 computers to Zambia, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda Burundi and even outside of Africa to Malaysia, for helping Pakistani refugees start up a school.
In the southern Democratic Republic of Congo, Afrinspire supports Migames Development, a project which trains young people in the skills they need to start their own businesses. Afrinspire has worked with Tools With A Mission (TWAM) to ship computers and sewing machines to Migames Development, where they have proved invaluable. The computers have been used to educate students in their secondary school about IT, assisting them to gain key skills for use in future work.
Provision of computers is key to reducing the digital divide between Africa and the ‘Western World’, and enables communities to use the internet to educate themselves and communicate further afield than just within their local place.
We continually receive requests for laptops from our African partners, particularly for use by students. Computers with batteries are particularly useful because frequent power cuts make mains power unreliable, and the portability of laptops enables partners to take them into remote areas.
