About Kapeshi

Kapeshi Sponsorship Scheme

"This is how we now what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity in him, how can the love of God be in him? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth. This then is how we know that we belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence..." [1 John 3:16-19 (NIV)]"

What is the sponsorship scheme?

The scheme is run by Afrinspire member Annabel Manser.

The planned scheme will involve groups or individuals who will sponsor a child attending Kapeshi Community School. The money will be used for a number of different needs:

  • To buy school resources e.g. pens, pencils, paper, a blackboard, books, desks and chairs
  • To provide the children with a healthy nutritious meal every day
  • To help pay the teacher, when the school children's parents are unable to afford it
  • To build and roof a proper school building
  • To employ another teacher
  • To buy gifts, such as clothes or toys, for the children

What is Kapeshi Community School?

Community schools are set up as need requires and resources are available in rural areas in Zambia where there are no Government schools. The idea is that a local adult will teach and the livelihood they lose by being unable to work in their fields (these are usually in subsistence farming areas) will be replaced by a monthly income paid by the parents whose children attend the school. Kapeshi Community School was set up by Pastor Barry Ilunga and others in 2002, as there was previously no school in this area. It is attended by over 70 pupils aged from 5 to 18, many of whom have never been to school before.

Where is Kapeshi?

Kapeshi is in Zambia in the Copperbelt (central north area of the country) near Chingola, a small mining town. It is very isolated in the bush and difficult to get to.

Who is Pastor Barry Ilunga?

Rev. Barry Ilunga is a Zambian Pastor who, with his wife Fredah, has planted 40 churches in rural areas in Zambia, Botswana and the Democratic Republic of Congo. I first met him when I was in Zambia on Africa Quest last year when he took us on ministry in a Zambian refugee camp and in Botswana. I returned to stay with his family and do ministry with them last June and that is when he told me about his idea for child sponsorship in Kapeshi. He will be responsible for receiving the sponsorship money in Zambia and using it to organise, purchase and distribute goods in Kapeshi.

How can I sponsor a child in Kapeshi?

If you would like to sponsor a child in Kapeshi you can fill in the response slip below and return me. A guide amount for sponsorship is £10 per month, but any more or little you can afford will be extremely welcome. You will also receive regular updates on their progress and that of the project. Although the money you give will benefit all the children, you are welcome to write to your sponsored child and send them small gifts if you would like. It would be wonderful if you would also like to support them in prayer.

How else can I help?

Your support in prayer, whether you donate financially or not, is essential to the successful aid of Kapeshi village through this scheme. Please pray for wisdom for both me and Barry Ilunga as we collect and administer the funds as they become available. Also pray that between us we can make a lasting and long-term difference to the village wihout causing a dependency culture to emerge. If you want to help then please fill out a Response form.
