Afrinspire supports the Development Study Centre set up by AIDTS...

The new block just before moving in

One of the projects supported by AFRINSPIRE is the building of a Development Study Centre in Mbarara in Uganda.

This Centre will be a place where the Agency for Integrated Development and Training Services (AIDTS) can run its training school of short and medium length courses. AIDTS are already operating and provide training courses to significant clients such as OXFAM, The Red Cross, Action Aid, TEAR Fund, Concern Worldwide, Christian Aid and other organizations from Uganda and East Africa. They have been delivering this training in hotels and other venues. The Centre will become a focal point and improve what they are offering.

From plans made on paper in year 2000 a start to construction in 2001 has advanced to a stage where there are now the shells of 8 buildings in place with one complete and two more in the finishing stages. The AIDTS Resource Centre with Main administration, Library and Computer Training Centre moved into the first block of rooms in December 2002.

75% of the finance has been raised locally in Uganda from the earnings of AIDTS in providing consultancy and training and from hiring out of a vehicle. It is impossible to obtain loans in Uganda and so building proceeds as funds allow. Please consider donating or fund-raising towards this centre. Nkamuhebwa Willy has masterminded the whole project. He supervises the work directly to cut costs and has a team of young builders working continually on the project

The immediate targets for year 2003 are to provide water for the first block, which will cost £610. To complete the second block of training rooms (electric-wiring and fittings, ceiling, painting, floor tiling of 156sq.m.) will cost £2786. The completion of the third block of Library and Computer Rooms (electric-wiring and fittings, ceiling, painting, floor tiling of 160sq.m) will cost £2893. A security wall around the whole site will cost Ug. Shillings 14 millions or an equivalent to £5000. Then the remaining buildings, which are accommodation and a main conference and dining hall can be worked on. It is a substantial project but is progressing continually.
