Muhabura Diocese Tank Construction Programme

The Muhabura Diocese Tank Construction Programme is a programme based in Kisoro District in southwest Uganda, bordering both the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda. The programme's work began with a community called Nombe, where the Bishop of Muhabura, Cranmer Mugisha, observed community members - especially women and children - spending between an hour and three hours daily fetching water. The well was located far from the community in a valley of steep hills. Bishop Mugisha felt that this had adverse effects on household food productivity, as women are traditionally responsibile for food production and children. On discussion with European friends and colleagues, the bishop secured committments to the construction of effective rainwater harvesting tanks in Nombe.

Since 2011, Afrinspire has supported the construction of these tanks as a sustainable and effective way to aid long-term development in Uganda.
