Solidarité Oecuménique Pour L'Education Et Le Développement Commanautaire

Ecumenical Solidarity for Education and Community Development (SOEDC)

Burundi after suffering a 13 year conflict is one of the least developed nations in the world, with an estimated 836,000 orphans and vulnerable children as a result. The high movement of soldiers, compounded with camp situations has exposed many young girls to rape, early marriage, pregnancy and HIV/AIDS, as well as an increased number of street children. Consequently with more child-headed households many children abandon school. One of the biggest challenges now facing orphans and vulnerable children is accessing and readjusting to normal educational services, this is the challenge which SOEDC addresses.

In 2010 Afrinspire provided SOEDC with computers for a start-up internet café and computer training centre, which forms the hub of SOEDC operations. Several members work at the internet café which Afrinspire helped establish, and it has become a crucial resource for young people in the area. The computer centre further seeks to empower schools by providing access to computers for administrative work and by providing training in computer literacy.

Afrinspire supports SOEDC in the provision of educational facilities and basic needs to 130 orphans and vulnerable children, through the provision of school materials, uniforms, meals and services, vocational training and tools, as well as community networks for continued support and care. SOEDC has been recognised by the local council as the primary organisation working with vulnerable women and children in Gitega. Afrinspire has previously supported SOEDC with the provision of computers for a computer training centre in 2010, as well as the provision of school materials to 110 orphans in 2011.
